Farewell to AIESEC International 0506

A message from the PAI (president of AIESEC International),

-----------------------------------------------------------------

A few years ago, back while a relatively new LC member in Calgary, I was invited to an evening at an alumnus' place with a few AIESEC members and a few older alumni. It was supposed to start at 7:00, and so as an eager young AIESEC member I showed up at 6:55. The host, Richard, answered the door with a look of surprise, wondering who this could be showing up on time? He still had some worn blue jeans on and a winter jacket, and had clearly been at work. After explaining that it wasn't so customary to show up early, he asked if I wanted to come out to his backyard to help him as he did some work on his deck.

For the next hour, I stood in the cold Canadian winter with him, holding a jar of nails and helping him as he hammered some boards together. As we worked, I started asking him a couple of questions. He started with the usual sharing of what he did in AIESEC, and then slowly I could see as the emotions starting stirring within him. A sense of excitement as he told me the number of countries he had traveled to, and the adventures he had. A feeling of friendship as he explained what it really meant to be able to talk all night with people he had only met two days before. The pride of being part of something so big that the work he did had such a profound influence. And a deep gratitude knowing that those adventures, those friendships, those challenges had shaped who he was at that moment, hammering nails into his family home, a new child indoors with his wife, a fulfilling life's work, a sense of meaning.

That evening, from working on the deck to sitting inside the house with the artifacts from around the world decorating the walls, the eclectic music on the stereo and watching as this group of alumni and of friends' reminisced about their AIESEC experiences, the wonder that is AIESEC was unveiled. I watched as they revisited old photo albums and didn't understand half of what they said, but could see how much it meant to them. That night, a bit more of the magic of AIESEC was revealed to me, and every day since, I discover more.

But sometimes it takes an ending to help us realize how much something has meant to us. As I sit here in the office in this last hour, watching as members of my team slowly exit the door for the last time, I am reminded that one day we will be sitting around a living room table after working on the deck out back, with friends, our husbands and wives and children, and some pictures, music, and memories that will bring back that unique spirit which is AIESEC.
On behalf of my team, thank you for a year that will be worth sharing around that table. Let all of us who are leaving remember the spirit that is AIESEC, and aspire to a future that is a demonstration of that spirit.

Gratefully, Brodie

Josh who???

This post is to all the ladies (and some men) I wanted to let you know that Mr. Josh Hartnett himself is here in Calgary...and who said nothing every happened in Calgary....tsk tsk..

What's up!!!!

Hello All,

I know most of you are going through a slight bight with depression seeing as to how the new intern isn't coming until next week...and many of you are thinking...well now what...what do we do...well my dears fret no more because we have things for you to do...that’s right AIESEC Calgary has things...what things you ask...these things:

1. JAZZZZZZZZZ
Hope ya'll are having a great summer. But if you listen hard enough, there's something missing...that's right...a hot summer night is not complete without some hot music! So...to instill some culture in you savages, Frenchie (Tim) and I have decided to put together a little jazz experience, or if you will, cultural experience on Saturday July 29th.
It will be held at Beat Niq Jazz Club at 811-1St. SW Calgary at 8:30PM.
The band that will be performing on that night is Vancouver's October Trio: http://www.theoctobertrio.com/.
I do not know the price yet, but typically a 3+ hour concert is $10~$15.
They also serve appetizers at the club so it's quite nice to munch and enjoy the music at the same time.
Also very important: You NEED to RSVP for this event due to limited members seating. If you wish to attend this event, please write me an email no later than Friday night, July 28th at h.kung1@gmail.com (Henry)

2. RAFFFTINGGGGGG

We are going rafting on Sunday July 30th 2006 down the Bow river...due to certain legal consequences I will not be saying what we will be doing once we are rafting down the bow...but let it be said that for those who enjoy drinking it will not be disappointing....
So if you are interested in attending you need to email me ASAP at lmelhadi@gmail.com and let me know so that we can book the times and the rafts - since we don't know exactly we will be leaving book off most of Sunday

Take care all!!!!!
Your all caring president

Busy Weekend - Option # 2

Who would like to volunteer for Habitat for humanity?

well this Saturday they need a lot of help

We need additional volunteers for this Saturday to help with landscaping Suncourt, our 27 unit townhouse complex in the SE community of Dover. Do you think any AIESEC’ers would be interested? We’re really just looking for 15-20 people to help out and it will be from 8:15-4:00 this Saturday July 23, 2006.

If you guys are interested please email me at lmelhadi@gmail.com

remember if you can't take...give... (new quote what do you think ;p)

Frenchie's B-Day - Part 2

Yo everybody,

Regarding Friday, this Friday, July 21st, below is the information you need:

8PM - Dinner downtown: Conga Room Restaurant, 109 8th Ave SW
Their food is made of Spanish and Latino influences and they are pretty good at that. One can have wicked calamare, tamales, tapas; there are also several side dishes that can be ordered and menus to be shared with a couple of guys. The chef cooks several vegetarian dishes and I was confirmed they're all delicious (quesadillas in particular). A live band will be playing. The dinner will be approx. $20 per person, and of course you can drop by for a dessert or a cocktail if you don't feel like having a whole dinner. I made a reservation for 20 people.

10PM - Party: Plush Lounge, 205 9th Ave. SE (behind the Epcor building)
Lounge, music, great drinks, nice vibes, good peeps... the perfect mixture. Hope you'll like it! Please, please, don't feel like each one of you necessarily has to buy me a beer, otherwise I will have to refuse your invitation, should I want to preserve my dignity as a French gentleman (and my liver as a human being).

All those who come will get their friendly head-butt, yo that's the French touch.
See you then!
Timmmmmmmy (473-2558)
ps: again, feel free to post this e-mail/forward it to who is unfortunately missing in the list or anybody who wants to come

BIG BDAY BASH

Hey there,

So on July 22nd I will be having a kegger (a party with a beer keg for all those you aren't with the lingo) at my house. The party starts at 9 pm and it will ONLY cost you $10 to drink from the keg. But by all means BYOB. Come and celebrate my BDAY this Saturday. You better all have your drinking pants on. I live in 143 Sunvale Crescent SE. If you are taking the train it just at the last south stop - Bridlewood - and a 5 to 10 minute walk to my house. If you need directions or confirming your attendance you can reach me at pjvillan@hotmail.com or cell at 701-4123. It is on like Donkey Kong! Auf Wiedersehen.

Vipers Baseball

Hey, some guys from work were talking about hitting up a Calgary Vipers baseball game this summer. We're tentatively looking at grabbing tickets for the next game July 28 (Friday) so I thought I'd offer to grab tickets for any of ya'll who are interested in doing something different...although they will have beer there...and you can go out clubbing after the game, so maybe it's not that different. ;-)

Tickets are
Red $17.50 adults, $13.50 students
Blue $12 adults, $9.50 students

https://vipers.repeatseat.biz/images/Foothills%20Stadium.html

I checked the website and it looks like reds and blues behind home plate are available so I suspect most of the park is up for grabs right now. I'd suggest tickets down the first or third baseline so we aren't looking through the backstop. I am assuming student includes university students and those with internation student cards, but can confirm. If you're interested let me know by Friday, 21st and I can book tickets.

Alan, or someone else, it might be a good idea to fire this off to your distribution as I'm not sure everyone religiously reads the blog...although why you wouldn't make it part of your day is beyond me but...

Our beloved frenchie's B-Day Celebration

Heyo,

Hope all of you enjoyed a great, sunny week end.

As you can infer from the title of the e-mail, I’m getting older and will celebrate my 23rd birthday on Friday, July 21st! For that occasion, I would be pleased to see you and suggest we go out at night!

So here it goes: the party will be at the Plush, a pretty nice place with Latin vibes to enjoy in a great ambiance! What I personally like there is that one can also chill out, have a drink and meet people. How does that sound? ;-)

Below is the information you need:

What? Frenchie’s b-day
When? Friday, this Friday, July 21st , from 10 PM
Where? Plush Lounge, 205 9th Ave. SE (behind the Epcor building)
What to bring? Your smile, your boyfriend, girlfriend, any kind of friend… Everybody’s more than welcome, and there will be people from very different places, so you shouldn’t be scared to join us!

I’m currently trying to negotiate for discounts on drinks; we’ll see whether the French touch works for that.
I also thought of going out for dinner for those of you who would be willing to come. The problem is: don‘t know any really good place downtown… Should you have any suggestion, please contact me, I’ll be glad to hear about it.

Last but not least: I might be missing people in the e-mail list and feel sorry for that, so please forward it freely to who you think want to come.

I hope to see most of you there.

Have a great week, and

Merci!

News Time

There are two major stories over the past week:

The train bombings in Mumbai. -BBC, AFP, RFE

and

Israel attacking Lebanon. -AFP, BBC, RFE

One could potentially lead to a full-scale Middle-eastern conflict, while the other could dampen recent peaceful relations between India and Pakistan.

In other news:

The G8 Summit is being held in Moscow. -BBC
Japan raised interest rates above zero for the first time in 6 years. -BBC

TEST YOUR PRESIDENT!!!

Yup its that time again...

Ask your president anything about AIESEC or Life...and it shall be answered....remember there are no limitations...(except lets keep it PG)

Your all knowing president

p.s. let it be said that the previous questions were very weak...lets see some tough ones being asked!!!!

Reception dinner!!!

Hello everyone!

Our new intern from Malaysia - Wang Wee is in town, and we'll be having another reception dinner. Instead of the usual Moxies or Bottlescrew Bills, I've decided to do something a little more ethnic. We'll be going to: *drumroll*

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006 at 7:00PM
Ginger Beef Peking House
5 Brentwood Village Mall NW
Calgary, AB T2L 1K8

*cease drumroll* Okay maybe its not *so* ethnic... but its definitely a change. This restaurant can easily be accessed by the train by getting off at Brentwood station, and walking towards the strip mall. Plug that address into google maps or Mapquest if you need some more definitive directions.

Hope to see you all there. I've booked 20 to 25 people there, so hopefully most of you can make it : ).

Cheers,
Alan

Post Count

Here's something for y'all to stew over...our LC members' grossly inadequate number of posts (there are a few exceptions):

Iris - 10
Diana - 7
Andrew - 6
Liz - 6
Peter - 4
BOA_Dave - 4
Kris - 2
Eldon - 2
Angela - 1
Henry - 1
Blanka - 1
Layial - 1

Great job, Iris and Diana...I wish I could give out prizes.
Can't say the same about Layial, Eldon, Alan, Henry, Peter.
Andrew...not bad, but you haven't posted in like 2 months.
Liz did well and she's making most of y'all look bad (she's not even here).
Dave is doing well, too, considering he's on the BOA.

I hope this is a wakeup call for some of you.

All continents covered!

I am proud to let AIESEC Calgary know that we have finally matched with all continents of the world...with the exception of Antarctica. (Why don't we have an AIESEC there anyway? We should totally start one up with the penguins!)

The point of this post was to let you know that we finally have a match with Africa!

Chike will be working with the SHARP Foundation in September. He's originally from Nigeria. But right before the match, he was actually the MCVP Exchange for Italy! Is that cool or what?!!

Anyhow, more details closer to his internship start!

Over and out!

Because Layial Won't Do It...

Hi Everyone,

So i know everyone's going to be tired and cranky after all the Stampede fun. BUTwait... something even more exciting is around the corner!! We will be heading to Calaway Park for a day of awesome entertainment!!!

Who: YOU!! And anyone you want to invite... ALL ARE WELCOME!
What: Vania and Petey Pablo's B-day Bash
When: July 22nd at 11:00am at the gate
Where: Calaway Park!!! Follow this link
Why: b/c you know you want to... :)

We will be purchasing the tickets under an organization name (AIESEC) which givesus the special rate of $13.00 (versus $25.00 + taxes normally) so it's a great deal. The catch is that i need to know the number of people that are coming (yourself, andyour friend(s)) and have the money by Saturday, July 16th. I need to make a singlecheque to the park, so if you want to pay by cheque make it payable to AIESECCalgary. You can drop off your money or cheque at:

1) AIESEC office: #199C Scurfield Hall, 2500 University Drive N.W. (phone:220-6454) - if there is no one in the office slip it under the door in anenvelope.
2) Give your money to Vania (cell: 714-1280) or Petey (cell: 701-4123).

If confirmation and money is not recieved by this date, we will not be able toget you the special deal for the tickets. Of course, you can still purchase yourticket on the day at the regular price. We REALLY hope that you can make itout!!

Do not hesitate to contact Vania (vania.sze(at)gmail.com) or Peter (pjvillan(at)hotmail.com) if you have anyquestions or concerns.

Regards,
Vani and Petey

I don't know how many of you met David L'Heureux from HEC. Recently, he was matched to with a TN from the Netherlands! He sent the following e-mail to some of us. As I read this e-mail, I "re-lived" the NC experience...too many friendships and experiences that I can't even express with words. (Haha, still remember Toronto friends from the LC simulation and York friends I went shopping with on the last day.)

AIESEC.net forums spam

I know a lot of AIESECers delete AIESEC.net forum spam before reading it.

(Of course, I'm not talking about the AIESEC in Calgary weekly MD spam. Everyone reads that *wink*)

Yesterday, I just decided to check out the PAI forum. I found a discussion that I could relate to! I was so excited to make my first post (about NLDC)!

I later got e-mailed by UAE asking for more info about NLDC leadership styles session so that they can implement it into their NC. From one post, Canada impacted an entire country's delegation! Cooool! I'm definitely getting more active on AIESEC.net.

Quote from the msnspace of Tim Tang (AIESEC Toronto):
So you think you had no effect? ... Seeing the results of your actions is not important. Only the actions are....Your work is out there. You just have to have faith. --Joan of Arcadia

Hitting the lakes

I've posted some pics on my site from the hiking Allan, Ave, and I did on the weekend. We hit up Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Constellation Lake. Good times breathing in the free air. Check it out.

Feel free to post whatever you want...it's not like anyone else is posting. Oh, and in case anyone didn't get that, i'm talking about people (that's right, I'm going to name names) like Andrew, Layial, Alan, Henry, etc...you know who you are.

Damn Class

Ok, so there are two boxes in the sidebar that appear to contain nothing. I'm working on getting the text in them to show up, but for now you can just select the contents of the box to view them. Could someone please verify that information for me? Thanks.

Also, when you go to post on the blog, don't change your font. This will keep each post in a nice and readable "Calibri" font. Thanks.

Oh, and my class is getting in the way of the reception dinner. Can't you hold these things at 10 pm? Haha.

Reception dinner - TONIGHT!

....I don't think this has been blogged yet...

Well, for those who didn't get the email:

Hey y'all!
I'd just like to notify you guys about dinner with Ave and Gelman this Wednesday night...

When: Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at 7:00PM
Where: Moxies Downtown on 7th Ave (connected to the Sandman Hotel)

Go to the wine room upstairs. I'll book it today, and i'll notify you if there are any changes.
We'll all get to know each other! Come out! Have some food! Have a good time! If you need help getting there, give me a call and leave me a message if I don't pick up.

Cheers,
Alan

100th Post and Something Interesting

I was hoping someone else would have the honour of making the 100th post, but I guess that's a a little too much to ask.

Anyways, two former AIESECers that did their traineeships (or is that, internship?) in Canada have started up a blog. If you fit the description of being a new or old AIESECer that has done a traineeship (internship?) in Canada, I am sure you are welcome to join...all you gotta do is ask. You can get to it here. There will also be a link to it in the "AIESEC LC Blogs" box.

The News

Sorry for the tardiness of the news segment...I've already received zero emails asking what happened to it. You can thank Firefox and IE having different standards for that....

No $64,000 question this week, but concerns have been raised over the railway to Tibet. Critics say it will destroy the already fragile Tibetan culture. What do you think?
