BSD Plans

so you is all going to BSD? if you are or in a need of a wrist band due to the that you don't attend the u to th c then we should plan a meeting place. i will be there with coke on my right and a bottle of rum on my left. Buffalo!

MoM

It's a BIRD ... It's a PLANE ... NOPE! ... it' the MoM for March!

This month's MoM is absolutely AMAZING! We dare-say she's an AIESEC Superstar! Describing her as busy is probably the biggest understatement you could make. As EnCana account manager she is helping co-ordinate and facilitate the matching of the 12 NGO's that are in the process of taking interns. Her hard work, dedication and willingness to go the extra mile have made her a huge asset to the ICX Team! as such, we would like to congratulate ... (drum roll please ....)

Iris Wong

on being this month's MOM!! *APPLAUSE*

If you see IRIS around give her a huge hug.

Uptown Night

Hey everyone,

Tomorrow night at the Uptown, we are going to catch the movie Tsotsi. It starts at 7:20, I'll be in the lobby around 7. If you'd like to join me and some significant other AIESEC'ers show up or give me a shout at 803-9099, or email, bdido@ucalgary.ca for more details.

Hope to see you there.

Blanka

describe Liz in one word

Hey all,

I need your help : ) I have applied for an AIESEC internship in Hong Kong, that looks fantastic. Before the company makes a decision they want to get an idea of what type of person I am. I was wondering if you guys could post a comment on my blog describing me in one word. You can find my blog at http://lizzyw.blogspot.com/ Please keep in mind that I hope to show these responses to the company, so please nothing inappropriate.

Also, I have to make a video to send the company, in kind of a "VJ search" style. If you would like to be in the video let me know.

Talk to you soon,
Liz

Introducing Timothee from France!

Hey AIESEC!

So, as you guys may or may not already know, CAWST is now matched with France's Timothee (from Paris H.E.C.). He'll be coming over here April 13 or 14 hopefully. (Looking for temp accommodations...so if you guys have any ideas, remember to e-mail me! ) dtran gave me her awesome idea of posting up stuff about him and a pic of him as well. Thanks, dtran!

Here's Tim's self-intro to AIESEC Calgary!:

I'm 22, single, half French, half Mexican. My father's Mexican and my mother's half German, half French... You can call me Tim if it's easier for you, actually all my friends call me this way. I've got one little brother, Nicolas, who's 20 and my sister Joséphine is 14. Both of them live with my parents in the French Riviera, in a village called Sophia Antipolis, near Cannes. I've almost always lived in France, but I've been to Mexico several times already to see the rest of my family and I've been lucky engouh to travel a lot.3 years ago, I left home so as to go study in Paris, at HEC. I've been very involved in a humanitarian society and I went to West Africa, in Benin, for three months, for a huminatarian mission. I then went to Brazil for a 5-month internship and I'm just back from it. I don't have vocabulary enough to say how wonderful both Brazil and its population are!As far as my passions are concerned, I love sports and basketball in particular. Over the past 13 years, I've played in different clubs and teams.

I'm keen on music too. I listen to hip-hop music mainly, but I also appreciate jazz, soul, bossa nova, and I'll be very pleased to discover the music you like. I also do my own music (rap) and I've sung in a band, with a dear friend of mine who is DJ, for 7 years.I also read a lot, I'm very interested in Latin American litterature, poetry, History (Vallejo, Carpentier, Borges, Garcia Marquez, Neruda, Hugo, Beaudelaire).I love to travel, to go out, to know people, to discover new things. I think I am an open-minded guy.Well, now you know me a bit more! I'd also like to see some photographies of the AIESEC team in Calgary!

Ooo...so apparently he has a little bit to do with both Mexico and Brazil...interesting...doesn't that remind you of 2 interns who are already here who are from those 2 places?....I don't know, maybe David and Felipe? lol. It's gonna be so awesome!

2. Four movies you would watch over and over:
3. Four places you have lived:
4. Four TV shows you love to watch:
5. Four places you have been on vacation:
6. Four of my favorite foods:
7. Four places I would rather be right now:

Honesty is Key

OK, people, time to be honest. How many of you talk on the phone naked (or at least using Andrew’s “pants optional” technique)?

According to a British poll, 40 percent of men and 27 percent of women do so.

“The research also showed that people were so busy that one in 10 people admitted to wandering off and leaving the caller talking to themselves.” -Reuters

Life, Death and a Helping Hand

Today marked the passing of six-year old Namatullah, "the boy had a massive tumour on his face, and soldiers had rallied to his cause to raise the money to pay for his treatment in Quetta, Pakistan.

Namatullah's chemotherapy treatment was funded by church donations that were organized by a Canadian ambulance driver, Cpl. Brian Sanders.

At first, the treatment appeared to have gone well. The cancer that had attacked the boy's face was virtually gone.

After receiving his first chemotherapy treatment he was released from hospital Tuesday, and returned to his home. But by Wednesday, he was battling an infection and fever.

Soft Skills Session (Determining and Selling Your Transferrable Skills)

Howdy ya'll

The soft skills session was great! Tons of really great info on nailing that next job interview as well as targeting your resume and interviews to your strengths and relating them to past experiences! Definetly had a couple moments! It was great!

A big thank you Angela and Coral for putting it on!

CAWST

I hope the Soft Skills session turned out good, because the CAWST event went great.  Henry and Iris came up with a solid action plan, while Layial and I spent most of the night eating.  Actually, we met some great people (some that might help us) and I think we explained our ideas quite well.

Please take the time to ask one of us about the plan so we can all be familiar with what’s going on.

Ironically enough, they ran out of water at a water preservation reception.

The Oilers Have No Game

Just a couple of things:

  1. There are some new links on the right-hand side: AIESEC Edmonton (GO FLAMES!!), AIESEC Karachi (Pakistan), Meghan's Pictures.
  2. If there is a link you want to see there, let me know (Alan?)
  3. The Oilers suck
  4. People are actually reading this blog…from places you have probably never been
  5. The Oilers suck
  6. Andrew’s baby pic is getting a lot of love

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Why doesn't the Bow River look like that?

Thursday, March 16, 2006

Don't worry, Kris, I'm sure you have something interesting to say.

I see AIESEC Carleton has paid use a visit and laid down some trash talk about the scandalousness of our parties. If you check their blog, you'll notice a link to this one.

Thanks to everyone that accepted invitations today. I can't help but notice the "I'm Black" moniker used by Henry...well done.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that anyone with an event coming up should post that information here. I know we get spam every week, but with the blog, you can add cool pics and other fancy things. Just a thought.

Hey hey hey!

Hi people! This is a really cool idea. I don't really have anything of substance to say, so I figured that I'd just say a virtual hi. So, hi! Hope everything's good.

Soft-Skill Session Next Wednesday

Hello people,

So this is my first time blogging, and I'm doing it because Kent got my requested newsletter article in on time...so I'm doing this as a token of appreciation.

Next Wednesday, AIESEC will be hosting a soft-skill session titled: Determining and Selling Your Transferrable Skills. (For those of you who don't know what a transferrable skill is, it's like the organizational, multi-tasking, attention to details, etc. skills that you possess and can use anywhere regardless of the field you work in.) We have brought in a professional speaker, who has spoken at various international conferences. She will be talking about how to assess your transferrable skills and sell that through your resume and interview. She'll also be talking about some resume tips and the current job market.

Who: You and Your friends!
When: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 6:00-7:30PM
Where: ICT 114
Cost: Free for AIESEC members; $5 for non-members.
RSVP: Crystal at aiesec.cgy.er@gmail.com

Look forward to seeing you there!

I Wish...

"I turned on the tap to clean some knives and forks and beer came out," Haldis Gundersen told Reuters from her home in Kristiansund, west Norway. "We thought we were in heaven." - Reuters

Apparently, some guy working in a bar downstairs connected up the beer keg to the water pipe and vice versa. I’m not sure I’d want beer coming out of my tap the morning after a rough night at the bar.

Haldis is happy because beer costs like 8 bucks in a bar in Norway…I think she summed it up best with this line:

"If it happens again I'm going to order Baileys (coffee liqueur)," she said.

Pictures

After a party as scandalous as last night, there must be pictures available for the viewing public. If you have a picture and would like to post it, follow these instructions:

  1. Log into your blogger account

  2. Create a new post in the AIESEC Calgary blog

  3. On the tool bar of the post window, click the little image symbol – a new box will open

  4. Browse for the image and select it.

  5. Set either “left,” “centre,” or “right” for the image position

  6. Set the size to medium (large sometimes messes with the template)

  7. Click the big blue button (or maybe it’s red)

  8. After the image is done uploading, click the big blue button and voila.

Add whatever descriptive text you want and then submit your post.

If you would rather have me do it, just send me a scaled down version of your picture (say, 500 x 375) and I’ll post it for you.

And thanks to David for a great culture night.

Tips

You may be wondering what to post on this thing.  Well, the answer is basically whatever you want.  Here are some examples:

Interesting news stories
Embarrassing pictures of Andrew at the Roadhouse
LC events
Other events
Questions
Drunken slander
Anything else that catches your eye

If you’re still having trouble, check out the AIESEC Carleton blog (link on the right) and see what they post.

And be sure to comment wherever you see fit.  The whole point of the blog is to generate discussion in the community and bring it closer together.

And when/if you start hating posting in Blogger, download Blogger for Word and post using Microsoft Word.  It really helps for catching spelling errors.

When you go to comment, you might notice a word verification box you have to fill in.  This is simply to avoid comment spam, so don’t be alarmed.

Happy Birthday

I believe a happy birthday is on order for Andrew. Is there something happening at the Roadhouse tonight?

Welcome

Wassup y'all?

So this is the new AIESEC Calgary blog. I've invited some of you so far, but I don't have everyone's email address so if you could send me an email with yours, that'd be great. I see Diana is the first to accept her invitation. Andy was second (almost, buddy).

I need a couple of things from you guys:

1. Links that you want to see on the right-hand column. Notice that i've already shamelessly self-promoted my own blog.

2. Template/colour ideas.

One other thing...you need to create a blogger account before you can post/comment on this blog. All the details are in the invitation email.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to comment or email me.
